J.A.T.C. Frequently Asked Questions
How are applications taken?
Applications are accepted year round and are only done online at our website. No apprenticeship applications are accepted at the union hall.
What is the next step after I complete the online application?
There is nothing you need to do until you receive a test letter. Once you receive the test letter you can pay the $22 test fee to confirm your spot for that test.
When are aptitude tests given?
There is no set schedule for the test. The test is scheduled when there are enough applicants to fill the testing spots. This means that you may not get a test letter for months after you apply it will depend on when the last test was given.
Should I do multiple applications?
No, only apply once. By applying multiple times you slow down the process and prompt duplicate letters to me mailed to you.
When do I need to provide my transcripts?
Your transcripts will only be required if you are offered an apprenticeship position. You do not need to provide them to apply.
How often do you take new apprenticeship classes in?
We take applications year round but we only start a new apprenticeship class once a year, which is typically in late May or early June.
What is the next step after I take the aptitude test?
If you fail the test you will be sent a letter letting you know you did not pass the test. If you pass the test, you will receive a letter that you passed. Everyone who passes the test will get interviewed. Interviews are scheduled periodically throughout the year so it could be months before the interview date.
What happens after I am interviewed:
When you are interviewed by the JATC Committee you will be given a score, based on that score, you will be placed on the two year list. The applicants at the top of that list will be offered a position. The class size varies year to year depending on the work out look and other factors.
Do I need previous construction experience?
No, you do not need construction experience or training to apply for the apprenticeship.
